We are going to explore Furnas, one of the more emblematic places of the island of São Miguel. Starting our tour by the South Coast, we stop at Nossa Senhora da Paz, where we have an astonishing overview of Vila Franca do Campo, the first capital of the island. In Furnas we can observe one of the active volcanoes of the island, appreciating its impressive lake and seeing the boiling waters where the local traditional stew is made, which will be our lunch. Furnas is also known for one of the most impressive botanical gardens in Europe, comprising a huge variety of plants and trees, in addition to small ponds and streams. The main attraction of this incredible garden is a massive brownish geothermal water pool, where you can have a very relaxing and invigorating bath. While returning to Ponta Delgada by the North Coast, we still have time to stop not only in the Pico do Ferro, where we admire the view over the parish of Furnas and its Lagoon, but also in the tea plantation Porto Formoso, where we visit its factory and taste the local tea. And you will still have many surprises!
