THE BEAUTY OF AN UNKNOWN PATH

THE BEAUTY OF AN UNKNOWN PATH

It is said that sometimes the easiest way is not the most rewarding. BGREAT believes that choosing the most unusual option will provide the best rewards. Come with us to discover the unknown paths of these islands. It is with great pleasure that we will accompany you on this journey!

Of all the trails on the island of São Miguel, we decided to highlight the Lagoa do Fogo trail, located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande. When traveling this unusual path with about 11 km and during approximately 4 hours, surrounded by green landscapes and a magnificent view of the lagoon that gives it its name, we get a different perspective of the lagoon and the nature that surrounds it.

When starting the trail, we expect an uphill of approximately 4 km. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen and water were essential goods that helped us to conquer this path. When we finally reach a water tank, we travel along a flatter path, walking beside a canal where we can see some trout of different sizes. Also known as levada, this bypass channel sculpted by hand and cut into rocks, was designed to transport water around the island of São Miguel. At this stage it is possible to observe several endemic flora such as Azorean Blueberry (Vaccinium cylindraceum), Azorean Heather (Erica azorica), and Laurustinus (Viburnum treleasei) among others.

We continue the walk until we find a small dam, which dated 1998 and its function would be to capture most of the springs from the natural filtration of Lagoa do Fogo. Here, we took a break to absorb all the beauty of the surrounding nature. The blue of the sky and the green of the landscape are perfectly reflected in the crystal clear water. A small hidden paradise! During the final part of the trail, we continue along Ribeira da Praia to the banks of Lagoa do Fogo, where we are faced with a wonderful view of the second largest lagoon of São Miguel. The well-deserved reward!

Dare to do this walk with us!
